QLD Smoke Alarm Legislation

Smoke Alarm Estimator

Work out how many interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms your property needs to meet Queensland legislation — plus an indicative supply & install estimate.

Tell us about your property

Add a storey for each level of the dwelling (e.g. ground floor, upper floor). Then enter the bedrooms and hallways on each.

Storey 1

Enter 0 if bedrooms open directly to living areas.

Existing hard-wired alarms

Under QLD legislation, any existing hard-wired smoke alarms must be replaced with new interconnected photoelectric alarms. Add any that sit outside bedrooms and hallways above (e.g. living areas, garage) so we include them in the estimate.

How we calculate

Queensland legislation requires interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms:

  • One in every bedroom.
  • One in each hallway that connects bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling — or, if there is no hallway, one between the bedrooms and the other parts of the storey.
  • On storeys without bedrooms, at least one alarm in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
  • Any existing hard-wired alarms must be replaced with compliant interconnected photoelectric alarms.
